Ben's iMet7 Portfolio
Greetings and welcome to my iMet7 portfolio. iMet is short for
the
Internet Master's in Educational
Technology program at Sacramento State University. After completing
nearly 60 units in instructional technology at CSU Chico, a poorly
timed job change and family move to Seattle, I find myself back in
a master's program once again. This web site will serve as a repository
and portfolio for my work in this program. It's also a place to store
resources and links in areas of educational technology for which I
have special interest. Feel free to use and share any of the resources
you find useful at this site.
Areas of Special Interest
Distance Learning and Web-Based Training (WBT)
Distance education has long been a special interest and is the subject
of my unfinished thesis at
CSU
Chico. Using the Event Oriented Design
Model (Thomas Welsh), I was studying ways that I could use technology to
replicate or improve upon the interactions that are effective in face-to-face
training. As a CTAP Director in Region 2, I was a staff of one tasked
with providing professional development for digital high schools in the
ten
most rural counties in Northern California. In order to leverage
my time,
I designed and founded the
Center
for Distributed Learning and
CTAP
Online,
an online professional development community that is now used by teachers
all over California.
Multimedia Development
Multimedia and its use in education and marketing is also a keen
interest. The combination of text, images, sound, motion, and video
coming together to tell a compelling story intrigues me and I'm contantly
trying to find new ways to use it in marketing and education.
Macromedia
Breeze Technololgy and Flash
I've initiated the use of Macromedia Breeze among my county school
districts. It enables the use of a
familiar
tool, PowerPoint, for sharing information and for developing instructional
materials without the steep learning curve of other programs such as
Flash and Director.
I conduct a 4-day training institute in which I teach instructional design,
scriptwriting, studio setup, digital audio recording, effective PowerPoint,
branching and interface design, and more. Breeze is now being used in some
very innovative ways by educators in our region. Teachers are developing
tutorials for students: principals are sharing information about student
test scores with their school communities, and staff development coordinators
are using it provide training to teachers.
